Emergia Fiber Optic Network connects Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo

Montevideo, Uruguay, September 28, 2000 - Emergia Holding N.V., a subsidiary of Telefonica S.A., today announced the completion of the portion of its fiber optic cable network between Buenos Aires, Argentina and Sao Paulo, Brazil.

This is the first portion of the approximately 25,000 kilometer high-capacity, fiber optic ring that Emergia is currently constructing to connect 12 cable landing stations in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Guatemala, Peru, Puerto Rico and the United States.

"Our goal is to become the leading broadband services provider in the Latin American communications market," said Eduardo Caride, CEO of Emergia. "The demand for communications capacity between Latin America and the United States is growing rapidly, and the current broadband capacity cannot accommodate this surge in demand."

When complete, Emergia's cable network will connect undersea fiber optic cables with existing and planned terrestrial infrastructure to provide city-to-city connectivity among principal Latin America cities, the United States and Puerto Rico.
