Emergia completes it's Cable Installation in the Atlantic Ocean

Montevideo, Uruguay, December 18, 2000 - Emergia Holding N.V., subsidiary of Telefonica S.A., today announced the completion of the installation of submarine cable in the Atlantic ocean. This is a significant accomplishment made possible by the utilization of all resources available during the past months to complete the network quicker than originally anticipated. Emergia has made a diligent effort to complete this portion of the 23,000 km of submarine cable in the Atlantic ocean in record time in order to speed up the completion of the entire network.

"We are very optimistic about completing our network by the first weeks of January," said Jose Manuel Muñoz, COO of Emergia. "Our original target date for completion of the network was April 2001. If everything continues on the current schedule, we should finish the project three months early."

When complete, Emergia will be offering broadband services between the United States, Latinamerica and the Caribbean. Emergia's initial capacity will be 40 gigabits per second expandable to 1.92 terabits per second in order to position the network for long-term development and growth. The Emergia network will also incorporate DWDM technology and a self-healing fiber optic ring. The network will be maintained by SeaHorseä with vessels exclusively dedicated to both sides of the continent.
