Terra is the first ISP to connect to service. TERRA CHILE AND EMERGIA INAUGURATE BROADBAND INTERNET ACCESS

  • Through Emergia's fiber optic network, Terra Chile has become the first Internet access provider to connect to a submarine broadband system in Latin America.
  • Telefonica's investment signifies its strong commitment to developing broadband in the region.

Santiago, Chile April 18th 2001- Terra Lycos Chile and Emergia, today announced that Terra's is operating their Internet access through Emergias high capacity, fiber optics broadband network. Through this alliance, Terra becomes the first Internet services provider (ISP) to utilize the Emergia network.

Emergia completed the first broadband ring that unites Latin America and the United States on March 1, 2001. This makes Emergia the only company that has completed a high capacity submarine network at least two months ahead of the competition.

Emergias network covers approximately 25.000 km with an initial capacity of 40 Gigabits per second expandable to 1.92 Terabits per second. In other words, the current capacity is multiplied by 48 which opens up a world of possibilities for the development of the Internet and its applications.

The Emergia network, which represents a $1.3 billion dollar investment is 100% operational and offers services to telecommunications companies and Internet service providers with unrestricted access to the major cities of Latin America including: Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago, Lima, Guatemala City, San Juan and Miami.

For Terra Lycos Chile, access to the Internet through the fiber optics network means a noticeable decline in problems caused by using satelittes. A user navigating the Internet will notice an increase in quality and speed when connecting to the Internet. The completion of this ring also signifies the elimination of Internet bottlenecks. The use of Emergia's fiber optic network guarantees virtually 100% availability and reliability of service.

"For Terra Lycos Chile, connecting to the Emergia network means taking a huge step in incorporating cutting edge technologies that will directly benefit our customers. This technology will allow us to incorporate new services and increase our customer base," said Jorge Martina, CEO of Terra Lycos Chile.

"We are now able to offer broadband and interactive services such as real-time video, conference calls, voice over IP, among others." "We are very pleased that we have completed the fiber optics network ahead of schedule on March 1st," said Nicolas Carkovic, Commercial Director, Emergia Chile. "The next generation technology this network utilizes, will satisfy the growing demand for broadband in Latinamerica."
