Telefonica manages its international Wholesale Services under one business unit

New organization offers international carriers an extensive Portfolio of services with the most advanced technology

Madrid, March 11, 2002 - The Telefonica Group, the leading telecommunications operator in Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries, announced today that it is now managing its voice, IP, data and capacity services along with its supporting network under a new organization named Telefonica International Wholesale Services. The new organization offers international carriers access to a competitive portfolio of wholesale services.

Before the inception of Telefonica International Wholesale Services, the Telefonica Group managed its services under different divisions that worked independently: a) International voice services of fixed telephony operators in Spain and Latin America, b) Connectivity services through Emergia's fiber optic ring, which provides broadband services between Latin America, the United States and Europe, and c) International carrier services of Telefonica Data, which offered solutions for data and Internet connectivity.

With the integration of the services of these business units, Telefonica International Wholesale Services will have an active presence in more than 250 cities in 20 countries, managing a network of more than 200,000 km of fiber optics and 1,500 metropolitan rings, offering global access through more than 150 direct connections with international carriers, transporting 9 billion voice minutes and more than 50 Gigabits of Internet in the year 2002.

Telefonica International Wholesale Services is the answer to the evolution of the telecommunications industry and the growing needs of a highly competitive market. With its new organization model, Telefonica International Wholesale Services will provide first class customer service in all the countries it does business in.

The Telefonica Group has appointed Eduardo Caride as Executive Chairman and Jacinto Diaz as Chief Executive Officer of Telefonica International Wholesale Services. Diaz has held several executive positions with Telefonica and was previously CEO for Telefonica Latin America.
