Telefonica International Wholesale Services transports the international traffic for Meditelecom
March 19th, 2002 - Telefonica International Wholesale Services, the division of the Telefonica Group that offers wholesale telecommunication services at a global level, has successfully activated the interconnection via the Hispasat satellite from Spain to the second mobile carrier GSM in Morocco.
Telefonica Moviles, with 30.5% ownership of Meditelecom, started providing service in Morocco a year ago and has the license since January 1st, 2002 to transport international traffic originating and terminating within its network. Meditelecom has 1,250,000 clients and a market share of 40%.
Until now, Meditelecom was able to provide domestic service in Morocco only and was dependent on the incumbent, Maroc Telecom, to terminate its international traffic.
Telefonica's offer to Meditelecom was selected after undergoing an international bidding process in which other operators participated based on sales terms, reliability and implementation terms.
The interconnection was established in record time via satellite point-to-point link between Telefonica de España Satellite Communications Center in Guadalajara and Meditelecom Communications Center in Casablanca.
With this new interconnection, considered strategic for Telefonica because of the rising traffic between Morocco and Spain, Telefonica strengthens its presence in Northern Africa broadening the possibilities and capacity for international traffic between Telefonica and Meditelecom, as well as between Morocco, Spain and the rest of the world.
