Telefonica International Wholesale Services will provide international communication services to Thuraya

April 18th, 2002 - Telefonica International Wholesale Services, the division of the Telefonica Group that offers wholesale telecommunication services at a global level, has reached an agreement with United Arab Emirates Telco, Etisalat to interconnect and provide international communication services to the satellite carrier, Thuraya.

With this agreement, Thuraya's customer base will be available under the 88216 international code.

Thuraya, was formed through a consortium of operators and Arab investment societies and was constituted in the Arab Emirates in 1997 to provide wireless service via satellite to the Arab countries. It provides ample coverage that extends from the Atlantic coast, Europe, North and Center of África, Middle East, Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent.

Thuraya supports the use of small sized handsets, similar in size and weight to those utilized for GSM. Thuraya user terminals can work in dual mode (GSM and Satellite), providing Voice and Data/Fax services at 2.4. 4.8 and 9.6Kbps.

With this interconnection agreement, Telefonica broadens its service offering by establishing communications with mobile handsets working in remote areas of Europe, Asia and Africa.
