Progress Telecom provides custom metro ring to Emergia, expanding latin america company's network

ST. PETERSBURG- May 20th, 2002 - Progress Telecom, a leading provider of broadband services, has announced delivery of a custom-built, dedicated, private OC-192 metro ring to Emergia USA, Inc. a Telefonica, S.A., company offering broadband communications throughout Latin America via an undersea fiber optic network.

From its Network Operations Center in Lima, Peru, Emergia can monitor and provision services on the new ring in Florida which Progress Telecom dedicated to Emergia's exclusive use. The private ring connects Emergia's undersea cable landing station with various key sites in South Florida.

Development of the dedicated metro ring for Emergia is the latest step in Progress Telecom's commitment to provide innovative, advanced network solutions to its customers in the U.S. and Latin America.

"This agreement gives Emergia a unique solution enabling it to provision and monitor, as if it built its own network, but at a much lower cost. The agreement also expands and solidifies an already strong working relationship between the two telecom leaders," said Ron Mudry, Progress Telecom's president and CEO. "Meeting demands created by the growth occurring in the Latin America telecom markets often requires providing unique network solutions-solutions which we are committed to developing." According to the Yankee Group, data traffic from Latin America is expected to increase some 93% over the next four years.

"To satisfy the needs of our demanding clientele, we needed to expand our connectivity in South Florida without compromising our existing reliability, control, and provisioning speed. After careful study, we selected Progress Telecom's ring solution because it seamlessly extends Emergia's Latin American network to key sites in Miami, such as Telefonica Data's Key Center" said Henricus Cox, executive vice president of Emergia USA, Inc.

In December 2000 Progress Telecom and Emergia announced the signing of an agreement which allows both parties to capitalize on the growth of telecommunications and Internet demand in the western hemisphere. That agreement provides service to Progress Telecom customers needing connectivity to Latin America, while connecting Emergia customers to multiple destinations in the U.S.
