TELEFÓNICA PARTNERS INMARSAT FOR GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION OF NEW MOBILE BROADBAND SERVICE

  • Following the agreement, Telefonica Wholesale will distribute Inmarsat's BGAN service, completing its product portfolio for international customers

Madrid, July 5th 2006.- Telefonica International Wholesale Services has reached an agreement with Inmarsat, the leading provider of global mobile satellite communications, in which it will distribute the Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) service to its own channels.

The agreement will enhance Telefonica Wholesale's product portfolio with a satellite service which offers mobile voice and broadband data access through a portable terminal. Inmarsat's BGAN service distribution broadens Telefonica Wholesale's offer to international carriers.

With this step, Telefonica Wholesale's customers around the world will be able to offer a unique mobile voice and broadband service to end users, enabling them to make voice calls, send emails, surf the internet, connect to a VPN and many other applications, no matter where they are. The BGAN service includes:

  • Standard IP: Internet access up to 492Kbps.
  • Voice: simultaneously with standard IP.
  • ISDN: one 64 or 56Kbps channel.
  • 'Streaming' IP: bidirectional guaranteed 32, 64, 128 or 256Kbps channels assigned on demand.
  • SMS: to any mobile operator in the world.

This agreement grants Inmarsat access to the 19 countries and across the world in which Telefonica runs significant operations. During the first quarter of 2006, Telefonica reached more than 186 million customers.
